Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Riverton UT ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Riverton UT clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Riverton UT ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Riverton UT hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Utah or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

Riverton UT student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Riverton UT outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Riverton home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography school you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

What to ask Riverton UT ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Riverton UT area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Riverton UT employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have associations with Riverton UT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Riverton medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Utah healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Riverton UT home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Riverton UT area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
