Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Wall SD ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Wall SD clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Wall SD ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Wall SD hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in South Dakota or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

Wall SD student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Wall SD outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Wall home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask Wall SD ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Wall SD area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Wall SD health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Wall SD hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Wall health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with South Dakota healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Wall SD residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Wall SD area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
