Piedmont SC ultrasound technician testing patientNow that you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Piedmont SC, the next step is to start the process of selecting a college. First, you need to find the ideal program that will provide the proper training to become a skilled professional. And given that a number of states do require that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s extremely important that you research each school in order to assess and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one begin? Many students will start by looking for colleges that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost must be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional important factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they sponsor internships. These and other qualifiers will be addressed more in depth later in this article. Sonographer Work Description

Piedmont SC ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Piedmont SC hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Piedmont SC ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Piedmont SC hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in South Carolina or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Classes

Piedmont SC student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Piedmont SC outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Piedmont home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

What to ask Piedmont SC ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Piedmont SC area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Piedmont SC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Piedmont SC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Piedmont healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Piedmont SC home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Piedmont SC area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Piedmont, South Carolina

Native Americans and early settlers of Piedmont called the area "Big Shoals of the Saluda" after the Saluda River. The Native Americans used the shoals as a crossing. David Garrison established a grist mill around 1850 upon the shoals changing the name of the area to Garrison Shoals. Henry Pinckney Hammett bought this property for his cotton mill that used water power of the shoals. The name of the area changed again to Piedmont, "Foot of the Mountains" and became a mill town. The American Civil War disrupted Hammett's project until 1876 when his plant began operations. Piedmont was added to Hammett's charter for Piedmont Manufacturing Company and a railroad station. Water power from the Saluda River was also used to produce electricity to run the machinery from the 1880s to the 1920s. The machinery of the Piedmont Manufacturing Company was from Saco Lowell and Whitin Machine Works that helped finance Hammett's company.[4] In 1946 the mills were sold to J.P. Stevens and Company where it then was updated with modern features. Manufacturing continued until 1977 and in 1983 most of Piedmont Manufacturing Company burned down.[5]

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 4,684 people, 1,829 households, and 1,349 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 545.6 people per square mile (210.8/km²). There were 1,992 housing units at an average density of 232.0 per square mile (89.6/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 92.08% White, 5.85% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races.
