Chesterfield SC ultrasound technician testing patientOnce you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Chesterfield SC, it’s time to begin the procedure of choosing a college. To begin with, you must find the right program that will furnish the proper training to become a skilled professional. And since a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each college so that you can assess and compare your choices. But exactly where does one start? Most students will start by searching for colleges that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost need to be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional critical factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internships. These and additional qualifiers will be covered more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s go over what an ultrasound tech does and the credentials and online training programs that are available.

Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Chesterfield SC ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Chesterfield SC hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Chesterfield SC ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Chesterfield SC clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in South Carolina or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Classes

Chesterfield SC student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Chesterfield SC outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Chesterfield home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

What to ask Chesterfield SC ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Chesterfield SC area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Chesterfield SC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Chesterfield SC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Chesterfield health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Chesterfield SC home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Chesterfield SC area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
