Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Wakefield RI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Wakefield RI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Wakefield RI clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Rhode Island or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Schools

Wakefield RI student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Wakefield RI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Wakefield home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are considering, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Wakefield RI ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Wakefield RI area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Wakefield RI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have partnerships with Wakefield RI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Wakefield healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Rhode Island healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Wakefield RI home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Wakefield RI area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
