Sonographer Work Summary

Bradford RI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Bradford RI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Bradford RI ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Bradford RI hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Rhode Island or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

Bradford RI student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Bradford RI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Bradford home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Bradford RI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Bradford RI area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Bradford RI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have associations with Bradford RI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Bradford healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Rhode Island healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Bradford RI home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Bradford RI area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
