They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Shidler OK hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Shidler OK ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize through Shidler OK clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Oklahoma or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

Shidler OK student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Shidler OK hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Shidler home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

What to ask Shidler OK ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Shidler OK area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Shidler OK employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Shidler OK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Shidler health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Shidler OK residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Shidler OK area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Shidler, Oklahoma

Shidler was founded in December 1921 and named for Eugene S. Shidler, a Pawhuska, Oklahoma banker and rancher. The town grew rapidly to a population of about 5,000 due to the discovery of petroleum nearby (see Whizbang, Oklahoma) and the arrival of the Osage Railway (a branch of the Midland Valley Railway) in February 1922. In that year, Shidler had 19 oil-well supply businesses and six plants making gasoline. Shidler had a reputation for lawlessness with bank and highway robberies common. By the late 1920s, the oil boom had subsided and Shidler began to lose population. Shidler's population in the 1930 census was 1,177 and the downward trend continued. Shidler today is a quiet farming and ranching community although there is still some petroleum production in the area.[4]

During World War II, citizens of Shidler actively lobbied to prevent the internment of the Yamamoto family from Shidler (see Internment of Japanese Americans). Thanks to the efforts of US Senator Elmer Thomas, the internment order was lifted.[5]

    Shidler is located at 36°46′49″N 96°39′43″W / 36.78028°N 96.66194°W / 36.78028; -96.66194 (36.780342, -96.661844).[6] It is 29 miles (47 km) northwest of Pawhuska, the seat of Osage County.[4]
