Ultrasound Tech Job Description

South Heart ND ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in South Heart ND hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

South Heart ND ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with South Heart ND hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in North Dakota or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

South Heart ND student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local South Heart ND outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your South Heart home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are considering, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

What to ask South Heart ND ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the South Heart ND area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous South Heart ND health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with South Heart ND clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the South Heart medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with North Dakota healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their South Heart ND residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the South Heart ND area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
