How to Enroll in the Right Ultrasound Tech Course near Woodbury New Jersey

Woodbury NJ ultrasound technician testing patientSince you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Woodbury NJ, it’s time to begin the procedure of picking a college. First, you have to find the right program that will provide the appropriate training to become a skilled professional. And since a number of states do mandate that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s very important that you research each program in order to evaluate and compare your options. But exactly where does one start? Most students will start by looking for schools that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location need to be considered when making a decision, but there are additional critical factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internship programs. These and additional qualifications will be covered more in depth later in this post. But first, let’s go over what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are available.

Sonogram Tech Job Description

Woodbury NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Woodbury NJ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Woodbury NJ ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Woodbury NJ hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in New Jersey or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

Woodbury NJ student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Woodbury NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Woodbury home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

What to ask Woodbury NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Woodbury NJ area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Woodbury NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have associations with Woodbury NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Woodbury healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Woodbury NJ residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Woodbury NJ area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
