Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Stratford NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Stratford NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Stratford NJ ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Stratford NJ clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in New Jersey or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

Stratford NJ student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Stratford NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Stratford home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with any sonography program you are reviewing, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

What to ask Stratford NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Stratford NJ area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Stratford NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Stratford NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Stratford medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Stratford NJ residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Stratford NJ area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
