Sonographer Work Description

Spring Lake NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Spring Lake NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Spring Lake NJ ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Spring Lake NJ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in New Jersey or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

Spring Lake NJ student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Spring Lake NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Spring Lake home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

What to ask Spring Lake NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Spring Lake NJ area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Spring Lake NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Spring Lake NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Spring Lake health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Spring Lake NJ residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Spring Lake NJ area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Spring Lake, New Jersey

Spring Lake is a borough situated on the Jersey Shore in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 2,993,[9][10][11] reflecting a decline of 574 (-16.1%) from the 3,567 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 68 (+1.9%) from the 3,499 counted in the 1990 Census.[20]

Spring Lake was formed as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 14, 1892, from portions of Wall Township, based on the results of a referendum held on March 8, 1892. On February 24, 1903, the borough of North Spring Lake was annexed to Spring Lake.[22][23] The borough was named for a clear spring-fed lake.[24][25][26]

During the "Gilded Age" of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Spring Lake developed into a coastal resort for members of New York City and Philadelphia high society, in similar fashion to the settlements of Newport, Rhode Island and Bar Harbor, Maine.[27] A surviving example of architecture constructed during this era is the Martin Maloney Cottage on Morris Avenue next to the tycoon's former and no longer existent Ballingarry Estate.[28] Another fine example of period architecture listed on the National Register of Historic Places is the Audenried Cottage on Tuttle Avenue.[29]
