Sonographer Job Summary

Spotswood NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Spotswood NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Spotswood NJ ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Spotswood NJ hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

Spotswood NJ student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Spotswood NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Spotswood home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are considering, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

What to ask Spotswood NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Spotswood NJ area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Spotswood NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Spotswood NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Spotswood healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Spotswood NJ home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Spotswood NJ area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
