Sonographer Job Description

Rosenhayn NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Rosenhayn NJ clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Rosenhayn NJ ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Rosenhayn NJ hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

Rosenhayn NJ student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Rosenhayn NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Rosenhayn home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Rosenhayn NJ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Rosenhayn NJ area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Rosenhayn NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Rosenhayn NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Rosenhayn medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Rosenhayn NJ home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Rosenhayn NJ area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
