Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Ridgewood NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Ridgewood NJ clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Ridgewood NJ ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Ridgewood NJ clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

Ridgewood NJ student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Ridgewood NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Ridgewood home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Ridgewood NJ ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Ridgewood NJ area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Ridgewood NJ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Ridgewood NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Ridgewood health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Ridgewood NJ home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ridgewood NJ area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
