Sonographer Work Summary

Ridgefield NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Ridgefield NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Ridgefield NJ ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Ridgefield NJ clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

Ridgefield NJ student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Ridgefield NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Ridgefield home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask Ridgefield NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Ridgefield NJ area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Ridgefield NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Ridgefield NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Ridgefield medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Ridgefield NJ residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ridgefield NJ area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Ridgefield, New Jersey

Ridgefield is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 11,032,[7][8][9] reflecting an increase of 202 (+1.9%) from the 10,830 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 834 (+8.3%) from the 9,996 counted in the 1990 Census.[18]

At the time of European colonization, the area was home to the Hackensack tribe of the Lenape Native Americans, who maintained a large settlement to the north on Overpeck Creek. Their name is an exonym taken from the territory and is translated as place of stony ground [22] which describes the diminishing Hudson Palisades as they descend into the Meadowlands becoming the ridgefield that is part of Hackensack River flood plain.

In 1642, Myndert Myndertsen received a patroonship as part of the New Netherland colony for much the land in the Hackensack and Passaic valleys. He called his settlement Achter Kol, or rear mountain pass, which refers to its accessibility to the interior behind the Palisades. Originally spared in the conflicts that begin with the Pavonia Massacre, the nascent colony was later abandoned.[23] In 1655, Oratam, sachem of the Hackensack, deeded a large tract nearby to Sara Kiersted, who had learned the native language and was instrumental in negotiations between Native Americans and the settlers.[24][25] In 1668, much of the land between Overpeck Creek and the Hudson River was purchased by Samuel Edsall,[26] and soon became known as the English Neighborhood, despite the fact most of the settlers were of Dutch and Huguenot origin.[27]
