Sonographer Work Description

Port Reading NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Port Reading NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Port Reading NJ ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Port Reading NJ clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Jersey or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

Port Reading NJ student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Port Reading NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Port Reading home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Port Reading NJ ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Port Reading NJ area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Port Reading NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Port Reading NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Port Reading healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Port Reading NJ residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Port Reading NJ area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
