Piscataway NJ ultrasound technician testing patientSince you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Piscataway NJ, the next step is to start the process of choosing a college. To begin with, you must find the right program that will furnish the necessary education to become a skilled professional. And given that a number of states do mandate that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s very important that you investigate each school so that you can evaluate and compare your choices. But just where does one begin? Most prospective students will start by searching for colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost need to be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are other important factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internship programs. These and additional qualifications will be covered more in depth later in this article. Sonographer Occupation Summary

Piscataway NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Piscataway NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Piscataway NJ ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize through Piscataway NJ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Jersey or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Classes

Piscataway NJ student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Piscataway NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Piscataway home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Piscataway NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Piscataway NJ area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Piscataway NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Piscataway NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Piscataway health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Piscataway NJ home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Piscataway NJ area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

Additional helpful skills include technical aptitude, the ability to keep levelheaded when confronted by an angry or anxious patient and the ability to converse in a clear and compassionate manner. Piscataway, New Jersey

Piscataway (/pɪˈskætəweɪ/) is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States.[18] As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 56,044,[8][9][10] reflecting an increase of 5,562 (+11.0%) from the 50,482 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 3,393 (+7.2%) from the 47,089 counted in 1990.[19]

The name Piscataway may be derived from the area's original Native American residents, transplants from near the Piscataqua River defining the coastal border between New Hampshire and Maine, whose name derives from peske (branch) and tegwe (tidal river),[20] or alternatively from pisgeu (meaning "dark night") and awa ("place of")[21] or from a Lenape language word meaning "great deer"[22] or from words meaning "place of dark night".[23] The area was first settled in 1666 by Quakers and Baptists who had left the Puritan colony in New Hampshire.[22]

Piscataway Township was formed on December 18, 1666, and officially incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798, as part of the state's initial group of 104 townships.[24] The community, the fifth-oldest municipality in New Jersey,[25] has grown from Native American territory, through a colonial period and is one of the links in the earliest settlement of the Atlantic Ocean seacoast that ultimately led to the formation of the United States. Over the years, portions of Piscataway were taken to form Raritan Township (March 17, 1870, now Edison), Dunellen (October 28, 1887), Middlesex (April 9, 1913) and South Plainfield (March 10, 1926).[24]
