Nutley NJ ultrasound technician testing patientOnce you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Nutley NJ, it’s time to begin the process of selecting a college. First, you must find the ideal program that will provide the appropriate training to become a qualified professional. And given that some states do mandate that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each school in order to assess and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one start? A number of potential students will begin by searching for colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location should be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional important factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internships. These and other qualifiers will be addressed more in depth later in this post. But to start with, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online training programs that are offered.

Sonographer Job Summary

Nutley NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Nutley NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Nutley NJ ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Nutley NJ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Jersey or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

Nutley NJ student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Nutley NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Nutley home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

What to ask Nutley NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Nutley NJ area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Nutley NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Nutley NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Nutley health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Nutley NJ home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Nutley NJ area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Nutley, New Jersey

Nutley is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 28,370,[10][11][12] reflecting an increase of 1,008 (+3.7%) from the 27,362 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 263 (+1.0%) from the 27,099 counted in the 1990 Census.[22]

What is now Nutley was originally incorporated as Franklin Township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 18, 1874, from portions of Belleville Township. Nutley was incorporated as a Town on March 5, 1902, replacing Franklin Township.[23][24] In 1981, the town was one of seven Essex County municipalities to pass a referendum to become a township, joining four municipalities that had already made the change, of what would ultimately be more than a dozen Essex County municipalities to reclassify themselves as townships in order take advantage of federal revenue sharing policies that allocated townships a greater share of government aid to municipalities on a per capita basis.[25][26][27][28]

Nutley grew slowly as Newark developed. The first European settler in the area, recorded in the minutes of a Newark town meeting in 1693, was a Dutch painter named Bastian Van Giesen.[29] His house, known as Vreeland Homestead, still stands today on Chestnut Street and is the location of the Nutley Women's Club. John Treat and Thomas Stagg purchased lots adjacent to Van Geisen's in 1695 and 1698 respectively. The Van Riper House is another building from the era.
