Mendham NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Mendham NJ clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Mendham NJ ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Mendham NJ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in New Jersey or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

Mendham NJ student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Mendham NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Mendham home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Mendham NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Mendham NJ area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Mendham NJ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have relationships with Mendham NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Mendham healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Mendham NJ home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Mendham NJ area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
