How to Pick the Right Sonography College near Magnolia New Jersey

Magnolia NJ ultrasound technician testing patientSince you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Magnolia NJ, the next step is to begin the process of choosing a school. To begin with, you need to find the right program that will furnish the necessary education to become a skilled professional. And given that a number of states do mandate that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program so that you can assess and compare your choices. But just where does one start? Most potential students will begin by looking for colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost need to be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other significant factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internship programs. These and additional qualifiers will be addressed more in depth later in this article. But to start with, let’s discuss what an ultrasound tech does and the credentials and online education options that are available.

Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Magnolia NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Magnolia NJ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Magnolia NJ ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Magnolia NJ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Jersey or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

Magnolia NJ student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Magnolia NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Magnolia home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

What to ask Magnolia NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Magnolia NJ area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Magnolia NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Magnolia NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Magnolia healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Magnolia NJ home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Magnolia NJ area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
