Lawnside NJ ultrasound technician testing patientNow that you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Lawnside NJ, the next step is to start the process of picking a college. To begin with, you have to find the right program that will furnish the proper instruction to become a skilled professional. And given that a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you research each college in order to evaluate and compare your choices. But just where does one start? Many potential students will start by searching for colleges that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost must be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional important factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internships. These and other qualifications will be discussed more in depth later in this article. But to start with, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the credentials and online training programs that are offered.

Sonographer Work Description

Lawnside NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Lawnside NJ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Lawnside NJ ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Lawnside NJ hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Jersey or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

Lawnside NJ student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Lawnside NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Lawnside home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Lawnside NJ ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Lawnside NJ area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Lawnside NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Lawnside NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Lawnside health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Lawnside NJ residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Lawnside NJ area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
