Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Holmdel NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Holmdel NJ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Holmdel NJ ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Holmdel NJ clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

Holmdel NJ student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Holmdel NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Holmdel home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

What to ask Holmdel NJ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Holmdel NJ area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Holmdel NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Holmdel NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Holmdel healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Holmdel NJ residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Holmdel NJ area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Holmdel Township, New Jersey

Holmdel Township, often referred to as simply Holmdel, is a township in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 16,773,[9][10][11] reflecting an increase of 992 (+6.3%) from the 15,781 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 4,249 (+36.8%) from the 11,532 counted in the 1990 Census.[20]

Holmdel Township was formed by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 23, 1857, from portions of Raritan Township (now Hazlet).[21] The origin of the township's name is unclear, with some sources indicating that it was named for the Holmes family, who were early settlers of the area, while others point to Dutch language words Holm and Del, meaning "pleasant valley".[22][23]

Holmdel is located 15 miles (24 km) west of the Jersey Shore. The township is notable, among other things, for its historical and present connection to Bell Labs. Important evidence for the Big Bang was discovered at a Bell Labs facility in Holmdel by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson, both of whom won the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work here.[24] In addition, former Secretary of Energy Steven Chu earned a Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on laser cooling in Holmdel.[25]
