How to Pick the Best Sonography Course near Highlands New Jersey

Highlands NJ ultrasound technician testing patientNow that you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Highlands NJ, the next step is to begin the procedure of picking a college. To begin with, you need to find the ideal program that will provide the necessary instruction to become a qualified professional. And given that a number of states do mandate that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program in order to assess and compare your choices. But just where does one start? Most students will start by looking for colleges that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost need to be considered when making a decision, but there are additional critical factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internship programs. These and additional qualifiers will be discussed more in depth later in this article. But to start with, let’s discuss what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online education options that are available.

Sonographer Job Description

Highlands NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Highlands NJ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Highlands NJ ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Highlands NJ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Jersey or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

Highlands NJ student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Highlands NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Highlands home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

What to ask Highlands NJ ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Highlands NJ area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Highlands NJ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have associations with Highlands NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Highlands medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Highlands NJ residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Highlands NJ area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Highlands, New Jersey

Highlands is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 5,005,[9][10][11] reflecting a decline of 92 (-1.8%) from the 5,097 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 248 (+5.1%) from the 4,849 counted in the 1990 Census.[20] It is the home town of film maker, director, and comic book writer Kevin Smith. The eastern part of the town is built on a high bluff that overlooks Sandy Hook and the Atlantic Ocean, from which the borough derives its name.[21][22] Atop this bluff are the Navesink Twin Lights.

Highlands was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 22, 1900, from portions of Middletown Township. Additional portions of Middletown Township were annexed in 1914.[23]

Highlands is part of the Bayshore Regional Strategic Plan, an effort by nine municipalities in northern Monmouth County to reinvigorate the area's economy by emphasizing the traditional downtowns, residential neighborhoods, maritime history, and the natural environment of the Raritan Bayshore coastline.[24]
