Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Haworth NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Haworth NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Haworth NJ ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Haworth NJ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Jersey or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

Haworth NJ student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Haworth NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Haworth home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are considering, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

What to ask Haworth NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Haworth NJ area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Haworth NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Haworth NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Haworth medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Haworth NJ home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Haworth NJ area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
