Elmer NJ ultrasound technician testing patientOnce you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Elmer NJ, the next step is to start the procedure of picking a school. First, you need to find the ideal program that will provide the proper training to become a skilled professional. And because a number of states do mandate that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program in order to evaluate and compare your choices. But exactly where does one start? A number of prospective students will begin by searching for schools that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost need to be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other critical factors also. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they sponsor internships. These and additional qualifications will be discussed more in depth later in this post. But to start with, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online education programs that are available.

Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Elmer NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Elmer NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Elmer NJ ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Elmer NJ hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

Elmer NJ student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Elmer NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Elmer home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

What to ask Elmer NJ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Elmer NJ area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Elmer NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Elmer NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Elmer healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Elmer NJ residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Elmer NJ area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
