Sonographer Occupation Summary

Demarest NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Demarest NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Demarest NJ ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Demarest NJ hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

Demarest NJ student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Demarest NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Demarest home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

What to ask Demarest NJ ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Demarest NJ area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Demarest NJ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Demarest NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Demarest health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Demarest NJ residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Demarest NJ area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
