Broadway NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Broadway NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Broadway NJ ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Broadway NJ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Jersey or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

Broadway NJ student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Broadway NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Broadway home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Broadway NJ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Broadway NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Broadway healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Broadway NJ home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Broadway NJ area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
