Alloway NJ ultrasound technician testing patientSince you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Alloway NJ, the next step is to begin the process of picking a school. To begin with, you must find the right program that will provide the proper education to become a qualified professional. So it’s extremely important that you research each school in order to evaluate and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one begin? A number of potential students will begin by looking for schools that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost should be considered when making a decision, but there are other critical factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internships. These and other qualifiers will be addressed more in detail later in this article. But first, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online training options that are offered.

Sonographer Work Description

Alloway NJ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Alloway NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Alloway NJ ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Alloway NJ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Jersey or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

Alloway NJ student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Alloway NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Alloway home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Alloway NJ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Alloway NJ area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Alloway NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Alloway NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Alloway healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Alloway NJ home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Alloway NJ area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
