Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Temple NH ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Temple NH hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Temple NH ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Temple NH clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Hampshire or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

Temple NH student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Temple NH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Temple home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

What to ask Temple NH ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Temple NH area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Temple NH employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Temple NH clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Temple medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New Hampshire healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Temple NH home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Temple NH area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Temple, New Hampshire

Temple is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,366 at the 2010 census.[1] It is home to Temple Mountain State Reservation, and formerly home to Temple Mountain Ski Area.

The area was first called Peterborough Slip, which included what is now Sharon. In 1758, Maj. Ephraim Heald and his wife Sarah, moved to Temple, They, along with his brother, Dea. Peter Heald, and a cousin, Oliver Heald, were among the first settlers. Peter Heald is generally considered to be the founder of Temple, and his child, Peter, was the first white child born in the town.[2][3] In 1768, it was incorporated by colonial Governor John Wentworth, who named it after his lieutenant governor, John Temple.[4] The town of Temple, Maine was in turn named for it.[5] Temple Glassworks was founded here in 1780 by Robert Hewes of Boston. Although the company is long defunct, surviving examples of Temple glass are today rare and prized collectibles. By 1859, the town's population was 579, when Temple had two sawmills, one gristmill, and a tannery.[6]

Terrain is generally uneven and rocky. It is also elevated, commanding distant views to the east and south.[6] As John Farmer and Jacob Bailey Moore wrote in 1823, "From the highest point of elevation, twenty meetinghouses may be seen when the atmosphere is clear."[7]
