Sonographer Job Description

Seabrook NH ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Seabrook NH clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Seabrook NH ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Seabrook NH clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in New Hampshire or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

Seabrook NH student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Seabrook NH outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Seabrook home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonography program you are considering, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask Seabrook NH ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Seabrook NH area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Seabrook NH health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Seabrook NH clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Seabrook medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New Hampshire healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Seabrook NH home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Seabrook NH area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
