Sonographer Work Summary

Rosebush MI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Rosebush MI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Rosebush MI ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Rosebush MI clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Michigan or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

Rosebush MI student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Rosebush MI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Rosebush home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Rosebush MI ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Rosebush MI area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Rosebush MI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Rosebush MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Rosebush healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Rosebush MI home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Rosebush MI area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Rosebush, Michigan

Rosebush began in 1844 when Cornelius Bogan started a general store. He called the town: "Halfway" because it was approximately halfway between Clare and Mount Pleasant. In 1868, the Ann Arbor railroad came through the area and resident James Bush, while officially platting the land, bartered with the railroad some of his property for the right to have the station named after his wife, Rose. An addition to the community was later platted in 1873 by Elias B. Calkins and named Calkinsville; this was the name of the original post office on July 9, 1873. The post office name was changed to Rosebush in 1889, back to Calkinsville in 1890 and once again Rosebush on February 19, 1903. The name has remained unchanged since.[6]
