River Rouge MI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in River Rouge MI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure

An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with River Rouge MI clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Michigan or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

River Rouge MI student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local River Rouge MI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your River Rouge home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than traditional options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any sonography school you are looking at, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

What to ask River Rouge MI ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the River Rouge MI area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many River Rouge MI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with River Rouge MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the River Rouge medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their River Rouge MI residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the River Rouge MI area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    River Rouge, Michigan

River Rouge is a city in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan and an industrial Downriver suburb of Detroit. The population was 7,903 at the 2010 census. It is named after the River Rouge (from the French "rouge" meaning red), which flows along the city's northern border and into the Detroit River. The city includes the heavily industrialized Zug Island at the mouth of the River Rouge.

The small settlement incorporated as a village in 1899 within Ecorse Township.[6] In 1922 as the city of Detroit expressed interest in annexing land in the township, the Village of River Rouge incorporated as a city on April 3 to avoid being annexed.[6] A month later Detroit completed annexation of land in the township immediately to the west of River Rouge.

One of the most important historical associations with River Rouge is its relationship to a Great Lakes freighter, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in 1975 in a fierce storm in Lake Superior, with the loss of all 29 crew. The ship was constructed in 1958 at the Great Lakes Engineering Works in River Rouge and was the largest ship on the lakes at the time.
