Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Redford MI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Redford MI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Redford MI ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Redford MI clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Michigan or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

Redford MI student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Redford MI hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Redford home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

What to ask Redford MI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Redford MI area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Redford MI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Redford MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Redford medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Redford MI residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Redford MI area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Redford, Michigan

Springwells Township and Bucklin Township were formally organized and laid out by gubernatorial act on April 12, 1827. Due to postal regulations prohibiting two post offices having the same name, when a township was subdivided unique names had to be found. The Bucklin name was extinguished when it was split on October 29, 1829, along what is today Inkster Road into Nankin Township (west half) and Pekin Township (east half), named as a result of a wave of interest in China. In March 1833 Pekin was renamed Redford and the southern half became Dearborn Township on April 1. The name Redford was chosen because Indians and pioneers forded the River Rouge where the river runs through Redford.[4] "Rouge" is French for "red."

The township used to go all the way to Greenfield Road, but in the 1920s the eastern portions of the township were annexed by Detroit. This annexation ceased in 1926 when the township was given "charter" status by the Michigan legislature.[citation needed] In 1918 there was a post office named "Five Points" operating between 6 Mile Road and 7 Mile Road along the road of that name.[5]

Redford is the site of Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School, whose hiring practices spurred the 2012 Supreme Court Case Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Redford is also the site of the first Fretter's electronics store.[citation needed]
