Petersburg MI ultrasound technician testing patientNow that you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Petersburg MI, the next step is to start the procedure of picking a college. To begin with, you have to find the ideal program that will provide the appropriate education to become a qualified professional. And since some states do require that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you research each college in order to evaluate and compare your choices. But just where does one start? A number of potential students will start by looking for colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Naturally location and cost should be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional significant factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internship programs. These and additional qualifications will be discussed more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online training programs that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Petersburg MI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Petersburg MI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Petersburg MI ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Petersburg MI hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Michigan or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

Petersburg MI student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Petersburg MI hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Petersburg home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Petersburg MI ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Petersburg MI area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Petersburg MI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Petersburg MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Petersburg healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Petersburg MI home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Petersburg MI area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
