You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Kalkaska MI area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Kalkaska MI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Kalkaska MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Kalkaska health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Kalkaska MI residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Kalkaska MI area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
