Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Inkster MI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Inkster MI clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Inkster MI ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Inkster MI hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Michigan or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

Inkster MI student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Inkster MI hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Inkster home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are considering, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

What to ask Inkster MI ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Inkster MI area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Inkster MI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have associations with Inkster MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Inkster healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Inkster MI home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Inkster MI area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Inkster, Michigan

The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans, but was settled by non-indigenous people in 1825. A post office named "Moulin Rouge" was established there in December 1857. Robert Inkster, a Scotsman born March 27, 1828, in Lerwick, Shetland,[7] operated a steam sawmill on present-day Inkster Road near Michigan Avenue in the early 1860s.

The post office was renamed Inkster in July 1863. The village had a station on the Michigan Central Railroad by 1878. It incorporated as a village in 1926 from parts of Nankin Township and Dearborn Township. After much legal wrangling by the city of Dearborn, Dearborn Township, and the village of Inkster to sort out final borders for these communities, Inkster was incorporated as a city in 1964.[8][9]

As a result of the police beating of Floyd Dent in January, 2015, which was caught on a police vehicle's dash cam and released to the public, the victim was awarded $1.4 million. A special assessment of Inkster residents will pay for the settlement, on their July 1, 2015 property tax bill.[11]
