Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Gobles MI ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Gobles MI clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Michigan or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

Gobles MI student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Gobles MI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Gobles home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

What to ask Gobles MI ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Gobles MI area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Gobles MI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Gobles MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Gobles health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Gobles MI home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Gobles MI area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
