Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Fowler MI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Fowler MI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Fowler MI ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Fowler MI clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Michigan or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

Fowler MI student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Fowler MI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Fowler home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask Fowler MI ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Fowler MI area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Fowler MI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with Fowler MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Fowler healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Fowler MI residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Fowler MI area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
