Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Foster City MI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Foster City MI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Foster City MI ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Foster City MI hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Michigan or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

Foster City MI student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Foster City MI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Foster City home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Foster City MI ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Foster City MI area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Foster City MI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Foster City MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Foster City healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Foster City MI residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Foster City MI area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
