Eastpointe MI ultrasound technician testing patientNow that you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Eastpointe MI, the next step is to start the process of selecting a school. First, you need to find the right program that will furnish the proper training to become a skilled professional. And because some states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s extremely important that you research each school in order to assess and compare your choices. But just where does one start? Most potential students will begin by searching for schools that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location must be considered when making a decision, but there are additional important factors as well. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internships. These and other qualifiers will be discussed more in depth later in this post. But to start with, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Eastpointe MI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Eastpointe MI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Eastpointe MI ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through Eastpointe MI hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Michigan or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

Eastpointe MI student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Eastpointe MI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Eastpointe home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

What to ask Eastpointe MI ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Eastpointe MI area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Eastpointe MI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Eastpointe MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Eastpointe healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Eastpointe MI home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Eastpointe MI area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Eastpointe, Michigan

Eastpointe (formerly East Detroit) is a city on the southern edge of Macomb County, Michigan, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 32,442. Eastpointe forms a part of the Metro Detroit area. It borders 8 Mile Road on the northern edge of Detroit.

The community was first settled by Irish and German immigrants in the 1830s. In October 1897, a Post Office was established there with the name of "Half-way", as it was near the halfway point of the stage run between downtown Detroit and the Macomb County seat at Mount Clemens. It incorporated as the village of Halfway in December 1924 and reincorporated as the City of East Detroit in January 1929. Prior to 1924, most of the community formed a part of Erin Township. The city changed its name to "Eastpointe" after the change was approved by residents in a 1992 referendum; the name change had been proposed to remove any perceived association with the adjacent city of Detroit; the "pointe" suffix is intended to associate the city instead with the nearby affluent communities of the Grosse Pointes.

The city's school district was unaffected by the municipal name change, and was called East Detroit Public Schools until 2017, when it changed the district name to Eastpointe Community Schools to align with the community name. It has one high school (Eastpointe High School), one middle school (Eastpointe Middle School), and four elementary schools. Eastpointe Public Schools serves Macomb County residents, whose primary district boundaries encompass the City of Eastpointe and the southeastern portion of the City of Warren.
