Sonographer Job Description

Coopersville MI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Coopersville MI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Coopersville MI ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Coopersville MI clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Michigan or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

Coopersville MI student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Coopersville MI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Coopersville home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

What to ask Coopersville MI ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Coopersville MI area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Coopersville MI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Coopersville MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Coopersville health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Coopersville MI residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Coopersville MI area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
