Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Crowley LA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Crowley LA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Crowley LA ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Crowley LA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Louisiana or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

Crowley LA student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Crowley LA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Crowley home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

What to ask Crowley LA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Crowley LA area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Crowley LA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with Crowley LA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Crowley health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Crowley LA residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Crowley LA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
