Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Twin Lakes WI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Twin Lakes WI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up with Twin Lakes WI clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Wisconsin or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

Twin Lakes WI student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Twin Lakes WI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Twin Lakes home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

What to ask Twin Lakes WI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Twin Lakes WI area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Twin Lakes WI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Twin Lakes WI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Twin Lakes health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Twin Lakes WI residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Twin Lakes WI area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
