Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Tunbridge VT ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Tunbridge VT hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Tunbridge VT ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Tunbridge VT hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Vermont or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

Tunbridge VT student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Tunbridge VT hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Tunbridge home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer college you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

What to ask Tunbridge VT ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Tunbridge VT area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Tunbridge VT employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have associations with Tunbridge VT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Tunbridge healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Vermont healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Tunbridge VT home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Tunbridge VT area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
