Sonographer Occupation Description

Weston TX ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Weston TX hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Weston TX ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Weston TX hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Texas or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

Weston TX student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Weston TX hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Weston home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Weston TX ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Weston TX area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Weston TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with Weston TX hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Weston medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Weston TX residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Weston TX area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
