Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Webberville MI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Webberville MI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Webberville MI ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize through Webberville MI hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Michigan or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Webberville MI student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Webberville MI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Webberville home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Webberville MI ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Webberville MI area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Webberville MI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Webberville MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Webberville healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Webberville MI residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Webberville MI area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
