A number of individuals will start by searching for schools that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost need to be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other important factors as well. Sonographer Job Description

West Enfield ME ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in West Enfield ME hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

West Enfield ME ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through West Enfield ME hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Maine or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

West Enfield ME student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local West Enfield ME hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your West Enfield home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with any sonography program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

What to ask West Enfield ME ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the West Enfield ME area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of West Enfield ME health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have associations with West Enfield ME hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the West Enfield medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Maine healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their West Enfield ME residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the West Enfield ME area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
