Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Colby KS ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Colby KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Colby KS ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Colby KS clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kansas or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

Colby KS student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Colby KS outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Colby home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are looking at, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

What to ask Colby KS ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Colby KS area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Colby KS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Colby KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Colby health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Colby KS home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Colby KS area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

In 1882, a post office was established near the center of Thomas County. Area homesteaders lived under harsh conditions in sod houses, creating demand for a town to provide lumber and other provisions to incoming settlers. J.R. The following month, the Kansas Secretary of State issued the Town Charter. Kansas Gov. John Martin named Colby the county seat in 1885, and the city was incorporated in 1886. The Union Pacific Railroad reached the city in 1887, and the Rock Island Railroad followed the next year.[8]
