To begin with, you need to find the ideal program that will furnish the appropriate education to become a skilled professional. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each college so that you can evaluate and compare your alternatives. But just where does one begin? Many potential students will begin by looking for colleges that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Kaneville IL ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Kaneville IL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Kaneville IL ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up with Kaneville IL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

Kaneville IL student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Kaneville IL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Kaneville home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

What to ask Kaneville IL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Kaneville IL area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Kaneville IL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Kaneville IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Kaneville medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Kaneville IL home. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Kaneville IL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
