Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Naalehu HI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Naalehu HI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Naalehu HI ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Naalehu HI clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Hawaii or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Naalehu HI student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Naalehu HI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Naalehu home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

What to ask Naalehu HI ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Naalehu HI area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Naalehu HI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Naalehu HI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Naalehu healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Hawaii healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Naalehu HI home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Naalehu HI area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
